Blown Engine on 850 T5 R What to do.....

Post by Volvophil »

Any advice on what to do on this. I found a fresh 97 850 Turbo engine at a nearby Volvo only junkyard. What do Ihave to strip off of the old engine to keep the 850 T5 R HP and perfromance.

ANy mods that should be done while I got the 1997 out? intake, cam, timing belt, etc?

What should I do about the auto tranny.......thinking about switch to manual. But what am I getting into cost to match this engine.

Thanks@

Any B5234T engine in good shape will perform the same as the one in your T-5R. The only difference between the two models lies in the ECU programming. However, when chipped, the cars both perform the same and have exactly the same potential. If you did get the engine and you wanted to keep the current ECU, you'd have to swap the EGR system and associated parts from your blown engine to the new one to avoid a CEL. If you really wanted to, you could throw some GLT cams in from a B5254S engine as they have a bit higher lift and duration. As for the manual tranny swap, it becomes a bit more complicated. Here's the deal: Any M56, M56H, M58(I think, but you don't want this one; it's not very strong), M59, or M66 transmission will bolt up and work mechanically. But, only the M56 from the '93 to '95 model year cars will have the correct output signal for the speedometer to work. The only problem is that the throwout bearings tend to be more problematic on these earlier transmissions. If you really wanted to, you could still use one of these later model transmissions, while using a GPS device to determine your speed. I'd say that the total cost of a transmission swap including all parts and assuming that you do all the work should be just under $1500.
