compressor running when car is off Topic is solved

I have just recently noticed on my 2002 s60 that I will walk away from the car and when I come back I will find the car's compressor is running while the car is in the off position. This is definitely not the engine fan cooling the engine. There is air blowing out of the vents into the cabin of the car.

When I discover this I am not able to turn it off from the inside using the controls I can only turn it off by putting the key into the ignition and turning it just a little bit. I was told by someone else that this is some type of automatic feature and the compressor will eventually go off so the next time that this happens I should sit by and do nothing... well that day was today and I did what he said and it did turn itself off.

I have the 2002 S60 2.4T

When the cars ventilation system notes the presence of moisture/condensation in the blower area, the fan will run automatically run to dry the system. This prevents mold growth and odors from developing in the cars ventilation system. You will most often note this after using the A/C on a hot day. On very hot days (100F +), the fan may come on and turn off several times after using the A/C. There summer months where I live get very hot, needless to say the fan kicks on often after I've driven the car.

I was freeked out shortly after buying my car when I observed the same. The dealer explained this to me.

I had the same question since my blower does go on after driving on very hot days, as your describe.

Mine's not a compressor sound, but a more sublte hummmm even after I've taken the key off the ignition. Some sort of tiny electric motor sound behind the dash. The sound is faint, almost inaudible if it weren't dead quite in my neighborhood.

The weird thing is, I thought this sound would go away after a few minutes - and this morning, after having the car sit turned off all night, the sound is still there. I wanted to know what sound is this, and if it is normal.

as already said, aye the compressor may continue to run, or may switch on when your air-cons been hard ant work to dry off the condensor.

the slight buzzing you here is the computer gagetry...dunno why it buzzes though!

Even when you switch off and remove the key...it's still working in the background for a time. Same when you get it.

It will stop...if you turn off the internal alarm sensors..and lock/alarm the car.. it will stop after a couple of minutes.
probably why it finishes locking the fuel flap andother checks it performs...but why the hum?!
