240 station wagon, tacameter?

Post by caveman »

Has anybody ever succesfully put a tacometer(sp?) into the instrument panel of a 1989 240 DL station wagon? Does anybody know if this is possible?

I am in the same boat. I'm trying to install one in an 1989 240 DL. I have a 2 inch VDO. It is farley simple in that there are only 3 wires: a signal(G) , to/from the coil, a Plus(+) to the ignition switch, and a minus(--) to the ground. If you try to go direct to the instrument panel you could smoke the chip inside. I suggest a VDO or a Tach from IPDUSA. com and get some instructions. It also helps to have a friend at a dealership.

As the above post mentions the installation of a Tach is simple, a good ground, switched 12V power and a trigger from the negative terminal of the coil, you will not fry your ECU by hooking up a tach in this way.

Any VDO, or aftermarket tach can be used, or search your local wrecking yard for a dash from a Volvo with a tach.
