1986 240 starting problems

Post by John J Malayter »

I need help bad! My volvo will not start, I've replaced the fuel pump relay and tested the out of the tank fuel pump and I'm getting gas to the engine. I also checked the spark off the coil and found I'm not getting spark until I let off the ignition switch, then I have a strong bright spark. Recently I noticed that it seems to want to kick over but it bucks and I have a strong gas smell like its flooded, this only happens when I only turn the ignition switch for a second or so. If I continue to crank the engine It will do nothing. I've also noticed that sometimes after cranking the engine for a few seconds that something is holding power, the fuel pump continues to run and I hear a clicking noise (electric) from the injectors when the ignition key is moved from the starting position. Oh yea one more thing, it will start out of nowhere and while getting it home last night after fighting with it all day it started for no reason and when driving it home I noticed the temp guage on the dash was all the way down then it would be normal and so on? Someone please help

One possibility could be that the big grounding wire for the engine is cut off (by vibrations). The temp gauge all the way down is indicating such a problem.
