b230f turbo motor flooding

Post by jim stuart »

My 87 760 turbo starts fine when its cold, but if it has sat for only five minutes after it has been running, it is flooded to the point that it takes twenty seconds of starter running with the accelerator on the floor to start. If it sits for about an hour and a half after running, it isn't flooded. Any ideas on the source of this problem?

One more thing: I recently took off the intake manifold and changed the turbo core and did some other maintainance and now the turbo boost guage doesn't work. What did I not put back where it came from? Thanks for any advice/ideas. Jim

Flooding usually means leaking injectors, so I would use some Shell Gold fuel and STP Injector cleaner for a couple of tanks. This would help my older K-Jetronic (mechanical), and the D-Jetronic I had before that ('72 142E)

Also, perhaps you could also check Fuel Regulator. They always fail (though it's usually low fuel pressure, not high)...

Just some thoughts.

Long cranking can usually mean one of two things, flooding or fuel starvation. The flooding issue is usually injector leakage, but often when injectors get to the poinmt where they leak that amount of fuel a can of injector cleaner will not do the job. In my experience the injectors should be removed, diassaembled and cleaned in an ultrasonic machine.

I would definitly start with a can of injector cleaner to see if this helps, you have nothing to loose, but it may take a more complete cleaning.

Fuel starvation could also be the problem when a lengthy cranking of the started is needed to provide enough fuel, common problems with Volvo's here is fuel pumps, fuel filter, fuel pump relay.
