A flex pipe will reduce some of the stress put on the downpipe and turbo, but very few people use them. If you attach the downpipe with a bracket securely to the engine (using one of the trany to engine bolts) you will not have any troubles.
Before I did the V8 conversion I had a modified B230FT with complete 3" system from turbo to tail, used a single Dynomax Ultraflow muffler. Definite increase in power and the sound was excellent, not too loud for normal driving and cruising, but great sound under full throttle.
