Whining Noise Topic is solved

Guys,

everyone seems to have it happeneing in cars in colder temperatures. We seems to have it when the car is warmer, and like someone else said, the whine is coming from the bottom right hand side - near the pulleys and the alternator. Did anyone have anything to solve this?

My 96 855 has the same moan in the A.M. and goes away after a mile. It comes from the front right and seems to be more proportionate to vehicle speed but can't remember exactly. Only does it at low speed and I live in a cool very damp climate where my rotors rust every night. Thought it could be transmission pump seal or something. If it is internal trans issue other than a seal just wait till it blows up because there is nothing to do especially with high mileage. I will talk to some peers about this ghostly howl.

I have had the moan since day 1 during cold weather. Had it looked at during the initial warrenty and it could be reproduced but not diagnosed. That was the begining of my loss of faith in the local dealer (and the fact that they wrecked it parking lot).

My '98 Volvo v70 has the same low groan when I start it up in the mornings, only when it's really cold (below freezing). Nothing amiss under the hood, 5 minutes later and the sound is gone.

I have an immaculate 1996 960 6cylinder wagon w/only 45K miles. Never spent a day outside of Florida and has been regularly maintaned only at the Volvo dealer. My car is making this sound EVERY TIME I START IT. We have nicknamed her the "Screaming Swede" Have spent big bucks at DeVoe Volvo trying to have it repaired. They talked me into a new battery and alternator ($966) New timing Belt ($450) But, the car CONVENIENTLY doesn't make the noise for them, which I find hard to believe b/c it makes it every time the car sits for more than 4 hours. I'm about to trade this car in on a new Toyota simply because of the noise. It is so LOUD in the a.m. that it wakes the neighbors. This car is in amazing shape, otherwise...looks and drives like brand new...I love my car-it's like a member of our family, but can't deal with the noise, anymore. Any suggestions? [email protected]

Belt tensioner and pulleys been replaced?

For all of you who think it's the alternator or tensioner pully. Try removing the serpentine belt and starting the car. It didn't cure the noise for me. Neither did replacing the serpentine belt, timing belt, timing idler pully, timing tensioner pully, or water pump. Noise is still there and it bothers me. 98' V70 T5 with 107,000 miles

I found the site as I am experiencing this problem with my '98 S70 GLT (with ~97k miles). The last post is from 2006, Has there been any update since then ?

Without reading the whole thread, I would have to say it's the air pump. It's located underneath the battery. You can check for sure if you remove the air pump relay and using a jumper wire you can activate the air pump.

You should hear that same groan. An easier way would be to remove the cover on the relay and while it's still plugged in depress the contact and the air pump should activate and you should hear the same noise. I have a 98 T5 same sound for about 25 seconds.

My wife's S70 does the same sort of whine in the morning for about 15 seconds, and then the noise goes away. Strangely enough, this whine occurs only sporadically, and there does not seem to be any sort of consistency of the occurrences.
