89 740 Engine Seizure

Post by BDAY55 »

1. Wife drove car to diner and came back no problem.
2. Next morning, car won't start. It cranks but doesn't fire.
3. I don't smell gas so I replace main fuelpump/filter.
4. Car still cranks but doesn't start.
5. I pull plug #1, has gas on it. I notice corrison on end so I clean it and
put it back.
6. I crank engine, get a pop sound. Then a metal on metal grinding sound. Then
starter can't turn engine. That's where I'm at right now.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't know why it won't start to begin with. Now it looks(sounds) like I broke a rod.
Should I:
1.replace the engine
2.take out the engine and try to fix what broke
3.buy a new car

I would not condem the engine until I you are sure. Your initial problem where the car was running and then the next morning it would not start sounds like either a broken or skipped timing belt. Now you do not say what engine your car has, if it is the B230 SOHC engine you can simply replace the timing belt and get back on the road. If you have the B234 DOHC engine, these are an interference engine that when the timing belt brakes the valves will hit the pistons and engine damage will occure. The severity of the damage can range from bent valves to broken pistons. If your engine is the B234 the continued cranking trying to diagnose your problem could have caused additional damage. The only way to evaluate the damage is to remove the head and inspect.

Good luck
