engine overheat. is it dead?

Post by n_sabardin »

I broke down three days ago on the freeway. the radiator blew up and the car overheated. The guy said the engine is shot because he turned the key and nothing happened. it didn't spin. However, I tow it back today and start looking at it. the plug wires were melted but the pistons are moving up and down in the cylinders, the plugs were NOT melted, the timing belt is fine, no water in the oil, I can smell gas coming from the cylinders when the plug is out.
I get a new set of plugs and wire but it still doesn't start. I'm assuming I got the firing sequence right (although if someone could confirm it)...
Any idea?
It's a 96 850 turbo

Ok, I established the head gasket is shot. No compression or very little dipending on the cylinder.
How complicated is it to do yourself?
Any idea where I can get a good shop manual or instructions on this?
