I have an 89 Volvo 740, non-turbo with 118,000 miles on it.
I was driving down the highway today and the transmission suddenly
shifted down, then I lost power all together. Then I pulled over
to the side, it cooled down for a few minutes then ran fine, shifted
fine, for about 5 minutes, and then did the same thing again. I towed
it home. There is plenty of fluid in it.
Is the transmission shot?
If so, would you recommend I get an old one from a junk yard. I plan
to sell the car anyway.

I have the same problem with a volvo i just bought. There apears to be more than enough tranny fluid but heat is definately a prob here. The car drove fine for the first five miles or so then started slipping quite badly. This lead up to the transmission slipping altogether and not going anywhere. The same symptoms as the other two posters. when it gets warm starts screwing up. I had to pull over and wait until it cooled to get it home. it took several attempts at this.
So please respond with some help. I am not affraid to do some work. I just dont know crap about volvos and haynes guides suck.
Subsequently, is there a "Bently" Type service manual available. Robert Bently made a badass guide to mkII jettas.
Also if possible i would be happy to recieve an IM via AIM @ themadMohawk and MSmsg @ mourningair @ hotmayle.com NOTE: that was intentionally misspelt, insert the correct address.
