New electrical weirdness

Post by Jacoooo »

I finally get around to changing my rear dome light bulb. It works great but my hand slips and I hurt the switch I think..now neither dome light works. I also tried to get my left rear stop lamp ( brake light ) working, but a new bulb and cleaning all connections got me nowhere, even though it was working recently and would come back on when I banged on the side of the car. After this, my turn signals both stopped working entirely, then they came back on but the left one flashes at double speed, even though only the front signal actually flashes. Fun, huh ?

Hi, to me it sounds like you have a bad connection to ground. You don't mention what kind of car you have, but in most Volvo's the grounding cable for both rear light units is common. If the ground for the lamps is bad, odd things happens. If the turn light is flashing in double speed, one light bulb is bad or has bad connection. If you don't find the fault itself, I would try to connect a new cable from the expected ground in the dome straight to ground. Most often the ground cable is black. Just look for the cable having connections to all bulbs in the dome, that is how you can find the expected ground.

my 97 960 had a turn signal problem turned out in bulb socket positive
and negative terminals were flatened out and touching one another causing the problem.
