****ing Lights- Again!
Okay, I have so had it! I cannot drive this thing (1990/740GL) a whole day without the light out warning coming on. The lights aren't burned out, either. I have cleaned and polished and siliconed all the sockets, the bases of the bulbs and then later, replaced all the bulbs. Last time, it was because I got a light out, and when I checked, the passenger side backup light was coming on with the brake light. This afternoon, I got a light out; I checked, the drivers side brake light was out. I swapped the turn and brake light, they both work just fine. Went for an errand, another light out. This time it was the passenger side brake light- it was on, but so dim I had to get down on the bumper to see it. I pulled the assembly, and switched out the turn and brake. Same thing, swapped bulbs, they both worked. Five minutes ago, I had to run out again. This time, the light out came on and there are no lights out- anywhere. Someone gimme a cure before I nuke this irritating son-ofa-bitch car!

Here's something you can try. Crawl under the dash, pull out the "no bulb" light bulb, take it out and throw it away!
....just Kidding!!! On a serious note, is sounds like some of the contacts keep vibrating loose and causing increased resistance. I kept having the same problem with my tail lights and most times, just twisting the bulb holders and moving the contacts do the trick. I would further suggest cleaning and silicone greasing the ground wires where they attach to the body. These things are just as subject to poor contact as the bulbs and holders. This may be a condition that you will have to live with unless you completely change out both tail light assemblies.
Be thankful that you lights are still working. Having a warning light "crying wolf" is better than having no lights at all.

My headlights come on when I turn on the stereo, and the "light out" lets me know that the stereo power is on during the day. It's a lot of fun to confuse mechanics with this special 240 feature.
