850R Manual Gear Shift Replacement - How do you do It?

Post by Simon Ryan »

I have a 1997 850R Wagon Manual and need to change the Gear Shift Knob due to it being worn out ie: Leather.

Can someone please advise how I get the original one off.

My dealer says it need to be cut off....is this true?

Thanks, Simon.

Pretty deep excavation of vintage postings here, you must have been on quite the search.
However, Pass auf !, that video is for the automatic shifter, and the original post here is for the manual shifter handle. Robert has another one for that, and even as fealess as he is, he does not recommend trying to do that job in the car:

From my own experience, a good bench vise and a medium ball pein hammer are a must, and regardless the care taken, this part will break:

Very often my opinion coincides with his on these matters.
