Volvo V70 T5 Clutch burning out caused by traction control Topic is solved

In very slick conditions, such as ice and snow and particularly when you are not running with snow tires the traction control brakes the front slipping wheels. This causes huge strain on the manual clutch resulting in a burning smell within the cockpit and eventual clutch burn out at very low mileage - below 30,000 miles. A friend of mine is experiencing similar problems with a manual S60R.

Have any other members had similar problems?

My 2002 V70 T5 5 Speed has been through 4 tough, Massachusetts winters and is on its first Colorado winter with 66,000 miles on it. No sign of clutch trouble. I'm NOT easy on this car, but I don't beat the crap out of it when conditions are bad either. Traction control is always engaged and kicks in occasionally. Sometimes I punch it just to check it out, never thinking that it would be a burden on the clutch. (I'll stop doing this now!) I run 4 snows all winter.
