Hi--I know very little about brakes, but there is a metal on metal grinding noise, it is louder when braking or making sharp turns at low speeds, but sometimes you can also hear it when cruising. Sometimes it sounds like something is loose and hitting something else.
It is a 96 850 GLT with about 70K in miles. It looks like there are some grooves being worn in the front left rotor. Can someone help me what this could be, what would need to be replaced, and how much I should expect to pay.
Thanks much
96 850 Brake Grinding Topic is solved
GET YOUR CAR INTO THE SHOP NOW AND DO NOT PASS GO!!!!!!
If you continue to drive the car you will do more damage and it will cost you more!!! Much less it could fail you and the person that you end up running over. You my friend are in need of front brakes.

Ok now that I have that out of my system, your front brake pads are gone, wore out, used up. And it sounds like you are in for a front rotor; if you do one I would do two just to keep things even. So we are talking about Pads and Rotors and Labor for the front. I would also have the back looked at while you are at it.

Front pads, $48.83
Front Rotor, $60.50 X 2
Labor, Rate X 2 hours or so

Thanks Moose--I plan on bringin it in this week, just don't want to get ripped off.
Is there anything else in the whole brake system--calipers, linings, etc--tha they may say needs to be replaced as well? Sorry for my ignorance but I know zip about brakes.
Thanks

A shop will charge you for supplies; brake clean, grease, anti rattle goo, and so on. I am not sure, but a set of anti rattle clips should also be in the order. At 70k I would think that the calipers would be in fine shape still. Before the grinding was there a pull to one side or the other? If so you may need calipers. I would also have the flex lines to the caliper looked at also. At nine years old it may be time to replace them also. Just in media the brakes are a simple system and there is not much to it. I might also think about upgrading to a better pad to help with the stopping distance. There are many out there to choose from.
Good Luck, Da

You probably do need front pads and rotors, but I would go with Volvo pads and rotors. I work for a Volvo dealer as a mechanic and Volvo makes the best brakes for this car. I have driven too many 850's with aftermarket brakes and the stopping distance is terrible due to a heavy metallic pad designed for long life and as much on stopping the car. I don't know about you, but when I have to really use the brakes, I prefer the car stop over saving a few bucks. Also, for the record, I have had to use my brakes a bunch living in Boston.
