740 GLE runs rough
We have an 89 740 GLE 16V, and today shortly after starting to drive in cold temperatures (-20 C) I heard a noise. I was shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. Since then the car has been running rough while in gear; in neutral the engine sounds normal. I've decided not to drive it till I find out what it is, although I'm a little hesitant to drive across town to have it checked out. Any ideas what I could look for? Thanks.

Have you checked your engine mounts? The vibration may be increased due to the cold weather. I replaced mine on my '88 740 last fall, & the engine now runs smooth as silk. Was getting a lot of vibration thru the frame.
Look at your fan... if it is not centered in the plastic shroud, but is near the bottom of the shroud, you need new motor mounts.
Good luck.
