SRS code 5 on a 90 740 gle and a 16v question..

Post by joey »

I have above volvo I recently purchased. The SRS light is on, I did the code checking thing Ive seen online and found it was code 5. From what Ive read there are 10 codes for this model car. I have not been able to find a chart for this year though (ive seen the 3 digit code chart, but not a 10). Also, people seem really concerned about the light being on. If so, and if there is a prob with the bag, why not just unplug it? Unplugging it and disabling the light seems like a good option to me (since I will be the one driving it and Ive never had an airbag either...).. Im very versed in auto electronics and mechanics so I would think that as long as its not the controller that I could fix it, but Im leaving unplugging as an option as long as someone doesnt talk me out of it!

Next question. The engine is the 16v. From what Ive read its not the best engine. Looking in the oil filling hole in the head, the head appears to be VERY fresh (like it has recently been off and worked on). The car runs fine but has oil leaks, which I plan on adressing. How difficult are the cam seals (what I suspect) to replace? More importantly, if I fix the leaking on this engine, can I expect a long life? I have no problem with having to change a timing belt every XX miles (what is it on a volvo?) because im a long time Honda owner and very versed at that evil necessity.

Im new to volvos and like the car, and would like to keep it, but if it is going to be more trouble and not reliable, I would like to know upfront before I become too attached.

thanks!!!

JOey
