On another note, Consumer Reports magazine rates later model Volvos as risky used cars, with poor reliability records--but great safety features. Any impressions on their claims? I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Volvo XC90?
Just checking into the Volvo XC90--lots of hype from the car magazines, but it's the first model year, has AWD, etc. Does anyone have any experience with them?

In my opnion, they're right. The 1990s Volvos are just as solid as the run-forever 240's Volvo built for so long, but with added features that most modern cars have. These features are what breaks. SRS, ABS, etc... it's these things that go after 4 or 5 years, and they are expensive to replace.Consumer Reports magazine rates later model Volvos as risky used cars, with poor reliability records--but great safety features.
If you gotta have reliability, go for a 940 Turbo or 740 (8v). They are more reliable. I'll take my 850 any day, now that I know how it works. The inline 5 cylinder is bulletproof. So are all turbos since the late 1980s.
I heard Volvo ironed out the problems with its AWD system, so the 90 should be ok in that regard. I'd wait till model year 2 or 3 for it tho.
