I just purchased a 1983 240 GL, the body is beutiful and the interior looks like it just came from Sweden. My problem is this, when it gets cold (lower than 45 degrees) the car will only start after 30 consecutive turns of the key, each time the engine running for about ten seconds more until its warmed up. After the car is was it runs like a old, well maintained, 240 should, excellently. It, seems obvious that it should be a sensor. But I've learned the obvious choice is not always the right one, additionally, the previous owner (who has minimal mechanical skills) invested over $1500 in new relays and sensors.
Any suggestions would be appriciated, greatly!

I have easier starting using synthetic oil on my '81 240.

What kind of fuel system does your car have? Is it fuel injected? Try replacing the coolant temperature sensor located under the intake manifold near the firewall. This makes the fuel mixture richer when the car is cold. The other suggestion is the cold start injector located on the intake manifold. This can be checked by taking it off and seeing if it is giving extra fuel when the car is cold. Buy a Haynes or similar repair manual for about $15.00. This will explain how to check the various systems before you spend the big bucks.
If your car has a carb it is prcbably a problem with the choke. These are manual and activated by pulling a well hidden handle to the left of the steering wheel just below the speedo.

Sounds like your cold start injector. It is common fault, without the cold start injector your engine will not recieve fuel enrichment during a cold start and run (like starting and running a cold car without as choke). Replace the injector
