What are the common problems with S70s?

Post by Corsaire »

To all Vovlo fans (like myself)!

I am thinking of buying a Volvo S70 2000. Please tell me what problems you have experienced with this or similar model.

Would really appreciate your effort...

I heard that Volvos S70 have way more problems than 850s, is it true?

Also, my friend told me (he is a mechanic) that on newer models like S60 there is a Ford trans now! Any comments?

Problem areas:
Ignition switch (mechanical side)
Power seat controls

Mid '98 and up have a mechanical timing belt tensioner that must be changed with each belt change. No problem as long as it gets done.

'99 and up have Electronic Throttle Control (drive by wire). If it fails they are about $1000 to replace.

We have 128K on our '98. Our goal is  250k.

Failure of the ETM is always eventual. If you get an S70, get a '98. And as far as I know, all of the Volvo auto trannys are still built by Aisin Warner of Japan.

Hi I am also about to purchase a 1998 S70 5 speed manual with 97,000 miles on it. The owner has all records back to when car was new.

I am having a pre-purchase inspection done tomorrow morning (monday) and would appreciate tips on what to ask them to look at in particular.

People have mentioned "ETS" what and where is that - electronis throttle system or control or something? How can it be checked? Can you explain what about it fails (is it a computer or mechanical part?)

ANything else to watch for?

Thanks!

I have owned an '82 240, an '87 740 turbo wagon, a '94 850 and each time I have to learn more about the particular model - i would appreciate your input!

'98 S70 did not have ETM. They have the reliable old cable that connects the gas pedal to the throttle.

The '98 S70 is essentially the same as the 850 in the mechanical sense.
