740 overdrive, intermittently kicks overdrive
1989 740GL AUTOMATIC, INTERMITTENTLY VEHICLE WILL KICK THE OVERDRIVE OFF WHILE DRIVING FOR NO REASON. WHEN I HIT THE OVERDRIVE SWITCH SOMETIMES WONT PUT BACK INTO OVERDRIVE...EVENTUALLY IT WILL GO. DONT KNOW IF IT IS THE SWITCH, RELAY, OR ACCUMULATOR ON THE TRANSMISSION. ANY SUGGESTIONS

Hi. I have the same problem. I haven't kept my care on the maintence schedule and so the sevice light will usually come on for about 5 sec. However, sometimes it won't come on, the 4 gear disabled light comes on and then I have problems. Even if i hit the button it continues to disabloe fourth gear and If I don't watch it, it will cut out and not start for hours.
Has this happened to you?

I have the same problem in my 1990 740 Wagon. Can it just be disconnected or do I need to replace the relay and or button/switch on the gear shift nob.LASVEGASCRUISE wrote:1989 740GL AUTOMATIC, INTERMITTENTLY VEHICLE WILL KICK THE OVERDRIVE OFF WHILE DRIVING FOR NO REASON. If the overdrive is getting off and on and the indication lamp is actually indicating the same it is most probably something wrong with the OD relay. Take it out and open it carefully. Inside you will most probably find some cracks in the soldering on the PC board. Resolder everything that is looking bad. Install it and it will work again! This solution has been described several times in this forum, and by the feedback, it seems to be a working solution in most cases.

WHILE DRIVING TO WORK INTERMITTENTLY THE OVERDRIVE KICKS OFF. SOMETIMES IT TAKES A FEW ATTEMPTS TO GET THE OVERDRIVE WORKING AGAIN. YESTERDAY I NOTICED A CLICKING SOUND FROM THE FUSE BOX BEHIND THE ASHTRAY....THIS CLICKING HAPPENED WHILE I WAS TESTING THE OD SWITCH AND THE LIGHT WOULD GO OFF WHEN PUSHING THE OVERDRIVE BUTTON WHICH INDICATES TO ME THE OD RELAY AND SYSTEM WAS WORKING AT THAT MOMENT. ONCE WHEN THE OD KICKED OFF AND THE LIGHT CAME ON I PAID ATTENTION WHEN PUSHING THE OVERDRIVE BUTTON AND AT THE PARTICULAR TIME IT TOOK SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO GET THE LIGHT TO GO OFF...ALL THE WHILE I NOTICED I DIDN'T HEAR THE CLICKING SOUND FROM THE RELAY.
I MUST AGREE WITH LARY THAT IT IS THE RELAY. THANKS FOR YOU HELP AND I HOPE THIS MESSAGE ISNT TOO CONFUSING TO FOLLOW.

TOOK THE WHITE RELAY OUT, FOUND TWO SUSPECT SOLDER JOINTS, REPAIRED. WILL LET THE BOARD KNOW THE RESULT IN A WEEK OR SO.

POSTING AS PROMISED, TAKING THE RELAY OUT AND SOLDERING TWO SUSPECT AREAS ON THE RELAY CIRCUIT BOARD HAS SOLVED THE PROBLEM.

Yes I am sure it is a 1984. But it is a GL not DL, unless there the same. I have one of those Chilton repair books and I cant find any thing on the over drive period. I called a trany shop and they told me if I was lucky it was the cylinoid. But I have never heard of a cylinoid being in a trany.
