1989 740gl stuck in reverse!

the only gear my car is in is reverse. Park and drive no longer work, is this just a problem with the gearbox that is fixable?

Although you do not mention the model and year of your Volvo, when only reverse works it usually means a major trany overhaul. I believe there is a one way clutch used for first gear that sounds like it has failed. Have you tried to see if the car will move in 1st gear?
