v70 handbrake adjustment

trying to replace rear discs on my 2002 V70. cant remove disc because handbrake needs releasing. how do you do this? it seems a real pain.....

I found this site as I needed help removing the rear disks of my P reg S70 which has 220000 mile on it. I had real trouble getting the brake shoes to release from the disk. The method I found on the net said to insert a screwdriver into the hole to the outermost on the disk, there is a cog inside which needs rotating towards the centre of the hub, this brings in the shoes.
The obove did not work as the whole thing was rusted and they never explained where the cog was (at the top, just of centre to the left, as I now know). I with the help of levers I found the shoes at either side (left & right) I positioned the outermost hole on the brake disk over one side and placed a screwdriver through the hole onto the shoe. I then used a hammer to knock one of the shoes loose. I could not rotate the disk as shoe held fast so drilled a 1/4" hole in opposite side to existing hole and gently tapped the other shoe back whilst levering disk forward (best with two people). Then the disk should pop off.

You will find that the shoes have cut a groove into the drum of the disk creating a ridge which explains all.

When ordering front brake disks from Euro car Parts / other. Watch the sizes, as the size of disk stipulated for an S70 was incorrect in my case at 302mm. Should be 280mm for S70 with 15" wheel.

If the shoes have grooved the drum then the E brake has been set while driving. I would think that they would need to be replaced.
