Weird steering problem

Post by SFVtiger »

My 2000 S40 pulls to the left, but not all the time. Pulls, not drifts. The alignment is fine, tires rotated regularly and no sign of wear. Here's the deal--i just figured out that when it is pulling, if I stop, turn the wheel all the way to the right and then straighten it out and proceed, it drives straight an arrow. But I have to repeat the process almost every time i get in the car.
Thoughts?

Does this happen after the car has been sitting for a while?
The next thing I would look into is the left brake caliper.

I am not sure, yet. It seems to always happen after it sits awhile, like each morning, but what i am not sure about is if it happens a short time after the car has been sitting after i've "corrected" it by turning the wheel all the way to the right.
Someone suggested a stuck valve in the rack. They suggested a fluid change and treatment. Does this sound reasonable. A new rack is expensive and reconditioned/repaired ones are non-existent.

My car has done the magic pulling left and sometimes right and then sometimes left again the whole 5 years that I have owned it. the dealer said that it was normal when we got the car and I have just learned to live with it. I have found that I can make it change by stopping and turning the wheel to one extreme or the other, then when you drive it afterwards it pulls the other direction.
