Smoke from Engine 1996 850 Turbo

Post by New Volvo Owner »

1996 Volvo 850 Turbo. Unusual problem, when fan on radiator comes on shortly afterwards smoke starts to come out of rear of engine, between the engine and the silver looking plate. This happened when we were waiting at the drive thru @Mc'd's, and again when we were idling in driveway when fan came on. Any Ideas?

That smoke is oil vapor from the PCV system. If you look on the fresh air intake pipe right before it enters the compressor side of the turbo, there is a D-shaped spot that a hose with another vacuum line and an electrical connection plug into. Chances are that that connection has come loose and needs to be re-fitted into the pipe. Another possible source is a leaky turbo oil return line is allowing oil to drip on the downpipe and burn, causing the smoke. If that is the case, the fix is quite easy and can be found here.
