2001 V70XC will not crank

I have had an intermittant starting issue that has been diagnosed by my dealer as an alarm problem. They replaced bits of the alarm system and gave me the AOK. In my driveway I now have a XC that won't crank.

I suspect the starter/solenoid/brushes, but don't know where to look on this thing. I want to just bang on the starter with something to see if she cranks over. Where is it???

The starter is on the radiator side of the engine under the intake manifold.

Thanks dude. Had my wife hold the key in the START position and I gave a "gentle tap" with a 1"x1" piece of wood and a hammer. Fired up on the first tap.
