Airconditionning Problem

Post by Eric M »

Hi,
Im having a problem with the air conditionning of a Volvo 850.
When switching it on, it generates extremely cold air during a few minutes and then stops making cold air for a few minutes, and then starts again, and so on...
I never see any water under the car si I wanted to see if there is no problem with the drain of the evaporator, but did not see any drain hose.
Can you tell me where this drain is located?
Another thing I noticed is that the compressor stops when it stops making cold air. Do you know what switch/relay activates the clutch of the A/C compressor?

Another thing I forgot to indicate in my topic is that when the A/C stops generating cold air, the air coming out from the vents smells bad.

My volvo 850 has been doing the exact same thing for the last few weeks. In addition, I heard periodic squeaking/squealing noises coming from the the dash toward the passenger side. Today, the fan won't turn on. I'd be interested in any responses.

Had the similiar problem with my a/c and replaced the motor blower resistor. It sounds like you motor blower is bad if you hear sounds in that area. Bay 13 has a good site to show you how to get into the area behind the glove box to make repairs

Hi. I have experienced a similar problem for a long time. My auto mechanic has changed a few parts and the problems seems to be solved but sooner or later (days, weeks and even months) it comes back. I am not experiencing funny noises but I do notice that the air's odor changes and the compressor turns off (the blue light stays on, you have to look under the hood). There has been some relation between the fan speed and the problem meaning that if the air condition was working and the and you switched the fan speed to 3 the compressor would turn off but if you switched back to 4 it would turn on a gain. Sometimes this trick worked and sometimes it didn't. This time the guy noticed that the cable that regulates the air conditioning and comes out of the computer was getting unusually hot. He opened the computer and added more soldering to I guess improve the flow or electricity. I have had the car back for 2 days and so far so good. I will let you know if the problem is solved or not.
