1995 850T alternator not charging enough

Post by joebone »

I recently bought a 1995 850 Turbo Wagon, and after a month, the battery indicator light began illuminating very faintly. So faintly, that during the day, one could not see it. I put in a new Interstate battery and it worked fine for about 3 hours, then the same problem. a few days later, I was driving and turned the fan blower to max which resulted in the battery indicator light flickering erraticly, then going off. It stayed off for 10 days, then the same problem. Over about 4 days, this progressed to bright illumination and then the car wouldn't start due to not enough charge on the battery (12volts). I left the car sitting for a few days, and the battery was completely drained. I replaced the voltage regulator on the alternator, checked the alternator at a local parts store for proper charge (which it had), and reinstalled the alternator...same problem...testing the battery with the car running, it maxes at about 12.3 volts. Now all my dash gauges are flickering around while the car idles. What is my problem?

the symptoms u described indicate both

a short circuit or internal lights not switched off (boot / glove box / door)

and a loose connection in your car.

as to where it is u have to check.

may not be one connection or 2 only it could be many.

old trick in the auto business - try a diconnect/reconnect on the main wiring harnesses - you didn't say where you're located, but you may have some corosion/poor connection at those junctions.
