Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

S80 with rough jerking on 1st-2nd gear shifting

Post by Kevin Lee »

I have a year2000 S80 2.0T, recently I have experience rough jerking when up shifting from 1st to 2nd gear, as well as jerking when down shifting from 2nd to 1st gear, I can experience it especially when I am approaching a stop, the car will just jerk significantly.

Sent to Volvo, check the computer and nothing is wrong, also change the gearbox oil, they told me nothing wrong with the mechanical part but suspecting the control box(electronic problem). which will cost me at least few thousand dollars!!

does anyone know what is the exact problem that I am facing?

Kevin from Malaysia.

I have a very similar problem. The car intermittently has a very rough shift on medium acceleration. It makes the whole car shake. I have been to the dealer about 5 times now. It's still under warranty (S80 T6 2002, 2.9L). They have made changes to shifting software and given me a "story" that it is just my driving style. I don't beleive this to be true. They say that rolling onto the gas causes the problem. Apparently you're just supposed to "punch it" and spin the tires everytime you start out.

Has anyone found a solution to this problem? Or have any suggestions? I'm very concerned that this will cause other serious problems to the engine, transmisssion, turbo, ...

I had a similar problem in my 99. Mine, however, was the 2 -3 shift and I noticed it at 35K miles. This turned out to be the S1 shift solenoid sticking. This was about a $1500 job. Of course they had to reset the adaptive controller first before they would fix it and wait for me to tell them it was still bad. That transmission later died at 90 K miles. At 95 K miles the S1 solenoid let go again. For both times there was no codes thrown from the transmission. They also downloaded new software to help with the diagnosis the second time.

I have spent on this 2000 S80 over $8,000 for repairs. When reading your problems it is as if I have wrote them. My latest this morning my wife down shifted on steep hill and voila, transmission service urgent and engine service lights came up. If you can tell me what your fixup was I would appreciate it. Please send it to [email protected]

This car is almost criminal, I wonder what will it take to have Volvo being forced to recall all of them!

At one point Volvo send their techitian from East Coast to check why all sensors were faulty over and over and throttle computer was also replaced.

I am mad and will never drive VOLVO again!

Hi,
I had the same "shudder" problem with my 99 s80 T6. It was the solinoid problem mentioned above.... Got the dealer to fix it free (certified used car) but it took a few requests.

I had the same problem and it would shift to soon some times from 1st to2nd causing it to fall on it's face under med gas and rough shifts and kept taking it to the dealer and no code finally I just said replace it and that cured all it is like a different car much faster!! the whole thing costs about $3500 but well worth the money considering it was a $50000 car when new I had a ford extended warranty so it only cost me $100 so I guess go out and see if you can get an extended warranty it will cost around the same as the trans but you will be covered for other stuff for awhile so it works out better. If you can't get the warranty I would still replace the trans if the rest is good because it will be a smokin ride when you get the trans fixed.

I bought a 2000 T6 in September with 93K miles. I have the same problem with my transmission. Occasionally, and usually when accelerating hard, there is a hard shift from 2-3.

Also, on a recent trip, the message center told me "TRANSMISSION SERVICE URGENT" and the Check Engine light came on. I took it into the dealer yesterday, and he said it was an "Internal Fault" with the transmission, and the only way to fix it was to replace the transmission for $4000! (I don't freaking have $4000!). He did disconnect the message/check engine, and sent me on my way...

Last night, my father in law told me to drain the transmission fluid, and replace it along with some Lucas Transmission Conditioner.

Anyone know where to put transmission fluid in and where to drain it?
