Changing Timing Belt
Hope someone can advise. I have a 2000 S70 with 100,000 and want to change the timing belt myself. Is this possible? I went to IPD and they said they don't provide a timing belt for my car because of the "constant variable valve timing" issue. I can't even find a repair manual for my year. Is the 2000 S70 just too technical to work on yourself. I would love to save the money doing the timing belt myself, but I do not want to cause any damage. Is this job best left to a professional and my $500.00? Please help!
Hi Gpolley
Not really sure about the variable valve timing on your model, but I just recently changed the timing belt on my 97' 850R. Wasn't really that hard. Just make sure you have an efternoon to do it. Now that I know what to do, I could probably do it in about 45 min.
Here is a great link with detailed instructions/images of what you need to do:

I would also recommend that you change the serpentine belt as you have to remove it to get to the timing belt. Instructions:
http://www.volvospeed.com/Repair/sbelt70.php
http://www.volvospeed.com/Repair/850_serp.pdf
As far as the serpentine belt goes, it's real simple. I can't remember where I read it, but instead of buying some special tool from Volvo to turn the tensioner, someone mentioned putting together 3 quarters in a vice grip and using that as a tool. Worked like a charm for me.
Good luck,
Peter

What trim level is the S70? The t-belt change on the S70's, especially the ones with the VVT is a bit different from the job on the 850.

Anybody have any ideas on the "constant variable valve timing" issue? And the stuff I need to look out for on the timing belt change on the base S70 engine? Also any ideas on where I can get a repair manual or shop manual for my car? Thanks.

Do a search over on the brickboard. Someone posted about the same variable timing issue there and asked for help. After awhile he posted back with how he did it successfully. Good luck!

It is easier to change the belt on the S/V series than the 850. The timing marks are easy to see compared to the 850 and the belt is much easier to remove from the crank. Remember to change the tensioner
