Introduction & Question

Post by Guest »

Hi everyone,

I just found this forum today while searching for ways to install a MyFi in my '96 850 GLT. I will be pouring over this site later this week as there are a few issues I'm having - hopefully they've already been discussed. :)

I bought my 96 a few years ago as a safe, comfortable commuter and have been totally happy so far. I've only had two issues to speak of, one was the gas tank which was replaced by a local dealership and another is the driver-side door hinge/detent popping through door sill. I fixed that one by simply removing the detent... But I digress. :)

My question, is there a "best way" to install something like a MyFi? My GLT has the "premium" cassette player with CD changer controls (serial number B5.....). The head unit has two wiring harnesses, an antenna cable and a black cable attached to the back. I assume the black cable is for a CD changer? I know there are AUX adapters out there, any idea whether they will work with this head unit? What about the rest of the kit? I'd like to attach the MyFi cradle to the center console on the driver-side of the gear shift. I could then route all wires through the OBD-II / Coin Holder if I cut a small hole along the edge. I could also hardwire the power to the 12v outlet. This assumes there is enough space for everything in the console, of course.

Before I start the operation, can anyone offer comments or thoughts if you've done this before?

Thanks for the link. Yes, I had already looked through that thread - it was a huge help. I was really trying to figure out how feasible it is to get into the center console and run the extra wires, etc.

Thanks to the iPod thread, it looks like the Blitzsafe AUX adapter will work with my head unit (SC-811 I believe). The adapter is almost half the cost of the MyFi, but I just can't pass up a custom engineered adapter like this that will let me treat the MyFi as if it was a hardwired CD changer. :)

Now it's just a matter of positioning the MyFi cradle. At first I was thinking it could go down on the center console over a covered and unused switch (forward of the ETC winter/econ/sport switch). However, while stuck in traffic last night I realized how easy it is to pop the switch covers off the dash. To the right of the steering column I've got a sunroof switch and another for the rear defrost. The rest are unused, so I may try to rearrange the "blank" switch covers to create a large enough space to mount the adhesive plate from the MyFi kit. That would bring the MyFi a little closer to eye level at least.

I found one of the blank switch covers had a harness attached to it. Any idea what this might be?

If it's got a constant +12v wire I might be able to use it instead of tapping in to the cigarette lighter or headunit power wires.
