parking in tight spaces - is it ok to steer a stationary car

I was told on my High School driver education camp that steering a stationary car can do horrible things to your steering column (23 years ago). How bad for the car is steering it while stationary? It makes manouvring easier if you can do this. How much does it cost to repair the sort of damage that steering the car stationary would cause and how many times can the 850 be steered while stationary for damage to occur.

It is desirable to have wheels rolling while attempting to turn steering wheel. Turning steering wheel while stationary creates stress on steering components -- not only steering column linkage, but also tie-rod ends and power steering pump. Creates flat spots on tires, as well.

Why would you want to do this? You may not break anything -- but you are creating a lot of pre-mature wear and slopiness in steering.

Robert...steering into tight spots as the title says. To some degree turning the steering wheel while trying to park and not moving the car is unavoidable. Try finding a spot that isn't sooooo tight is my recommendation.
