240 DL engine temp
I own a volvo 240DL with about 125,000 miles on it. The car runs pretty well except for one problem; the engine temp gauge shows no reading at all. I removed the sensor from the block put in hot water and tested it with an ohm meter. It appears to be OK; the ohm reading matched the number that was given in repair manual that have. I was wondering if anybody out there would have any ideas as to what I should try next? Thanks Mike
ground the wire, the gauge should go all the way to the red , if not I would take the odometer out and take it appart and test the temp gauge 12 vdc , connect the+ and - to see if it moves. If it works that mean it is some were in the electrical arnes. I would not drive without a gauge, you always can get a temp gauge kit at the autopart store.
Good luck

Exactly, connect the wire that goes to the sending unit to a good ground, the gauge should move from cold to hot, if this does not happen next check all your fuses, 240's have a fuse design that often corrodes and causes poor connections so check each fuse in the box with a test light. If the fuses are OK then remove the dash (temperature gauge) and check for power going into the gauge. If there is no power then trace the wiring, using a good wiring diagram, to locate the problem. You know if you have power at the fuse box and not at the dash the trouble has to be between the two. If you do have power going into the gauge then the gauge it's self is faulty and needs replacing. There are many 200 series at local wrecking yards where you could get a replacement gauge at a very reasonable price without the expense or work associated with installing an aftermarket gauge.
Hope this helps
