excessive fuel consumption

Post by Gary »

Can anyone tell me what possibly cause an excessive fuel consumption? My 95' Volvo 850 turbo only runs at 16.6 L /100km. ( about 6km/per litre)
Thanks for help.

Go for the obvious first:
Dirty intake system - air filter, MAF, turbo leak/failure, etc...
Burned plugs, cracked coil or bad plug wires?
Fuel system: Filter, fuel pump, injector issues?

When was the last tune-up? Have you changed anything recently? Have you checked the engines codes?

By my conversion calculation this is about 14.18 miles per gallon - I had a 94 turbo (prior to accident) that got 19 - 24 MPG. Good luck.

My 98xc had a bout of low gas mileage which was corrected when I had the transmission fluid changed. I had noticed the car was not shifting smoothly and shifted back and forth going up hills. After the tranny fluid change/flush everything went back to normal.
