850 alarm problems

Post by A guy helping a friend »

My friend has a 97 850 that she bought recenly this month. She didn't get a key fob with it. Once she unlocked the drivers door and got in. The alarm went off (i believe just the lights where blinking with out a horn) and the car would not start. She got out locked the doors and tried again, tried from the trunk and the other door and nothing would unarm the alarm. She left it and came back the next day it was fine.

Well it happened again and now it won't turn off so her car is stuck. Does any one know anything about this? Any way to bypass or disconnect the alarm. I am going up friday to see if I can work somthing out for her so she doesn't have to have it towed to the dealer!

All the fuses attached to the alarm look like they also power needed componets. Relay 14 seems to just control the alarm, can I just pull it with out disableing the car? Any ideas PLEASE! THanks guys

I have dug into the alarm relay on my 95 once. I was having problems with a starting problem. With the wiring diagrams that are available on the web and this site, I was able to bypass the engine disabling part and determine that it was not the problem.

The alarm relay has many different controls in it and works with the ECU for its actions. The alarm its self is run by the ECU and not the relay. I would think with a little time and a soldering iron, and the wiring diagrams one could find a way to disable the alarm system if that is what you want to do.

The place to start might be the door and hood switches, to make sure that the problem is not there.

Good luck, Da

Volvos when bought New ( the dealer told me this about the 850)
come with a Long Key(master key) and a shorter Key (Valet Key)
She may be using a Valet Key, which is supposed to only let you have access to the front doors and not the trunk. If you say she can unlock the trunk then that obviously isn't the problem.

Try this.
Unlock the Trunk (Clockwise) Notice the locks work ok. Leave lock UNLOCKED via trunk lock.

Now.....
Lock and Unlock via Drivers Door. Notice that locks work correctly.
Repeat for passenger door...

Try to start car...If it doesn't start and alarm goes off, get out and lock the trunk 1st.....
did alarm stop?
If not Unlock trunk...
Lock and unlock drivers door...I know this sounds confusing but i had the same problem sort of and I was able to get it to work like it should by doing this....

There's a pretty complete discussion of alarm issues here:

http://new.volvocars.com/ownersdocs/199 ... 70_045.htm

Simplest way to turn off alarm: use full owner's key (not valet key) to lock, then unlock driver door.

There are several variants of the alarm system so the procedures can vary. On the standard alarm system, which is the most common, the entire system can be defeated by removing relay 210/211 but it requires that a jumper wire be installed between the relay socket positions associated with pins 50E and 50F on the 210 side of the relay. Volvo actually sells a dummy 210 relay that has the jumper wire built into it but a wire with a couple of spade lugs will do the same thing.

The 210/211 relay is located under the dash, directly below the fuse box, on the inside of the firewall. You will need to remove the lower dash panel to get to it.
