LibraLibra, My car did the same thing as yours, It did one of it's really hard shifts, a pop, and now I get nothing out of the transmission - won't even go into park. What did you end up doing about yours?

Dealer replaced it for just over 5k - no discounts. I guess if I had tried replacing the fluid about a year earlier, when the symptoms first showed up regularly (couple times a week), I might have saved it? But from reading these boards, half the people say never change the fluid, while the other half changes it regularly. It's too late by this time anyway.

Thank you for all of the advice. I drained and filled my 2002 Volvo Automatic trans with the Royal Purple Max life at $13.00 a quart (U.S.D) and it shifts like a dream again. Holds 4 quarts exactly on a drain and fill. Now on to new problems. I eplaced the oil with castrol gtx 10-30 but cannot get the filter canister off. I broke a band wrench and filter pliers were useless as the canister is plastic and if I tourqued down any more on it, it would have broken. Who puts those things on so tight????? All they do is keep fluid from leaking out... not hold the engine to the car.

THANK you all for your posts. I've just read thru ALL of the transmission-related issues for the 2001 S60.
Will try the flush first before investing in a rebuilt transmission.
onward !

My 2001 Volvo S60 has a transmission problem after it warms up and only in traffic scenarios. Between 3rd and drive, the gear disengages and when throttle is applied, it slams into drive. I thought maybe the fluid was low but no. I then thought it might be the pump going out but the valve body is as good an explanation as any. I have done a drain and fill twice with Royal Purple but still have this issue. I was hoping that it would work itself free but it hasn't yet. I KNEW I should have bought a 5 speed. Every time I buy an automatic... the transmission goes out. My wife just had to have a Volvo. I am going back to BMWs.
For Sale: 2001 Volvo S60. $4.000.00 or best offer. Will trade for any 5 speed M3 BMW built after 1995.

2002 AWD: I have the same issue. What I have done is anticipate the slow gear change when accelerating from a stop or slow speed. I believe the problem is caused by to low a pressure in the valve body at the lower gears. It makes sense because those gears are located in the rear of the transmission.
What I do let the transmission is ease into gear with little throttle until the transmission is in 3rd gear. Once up to 25 mph or so I have no problems.
