240 Bumper trim

Any tips on reattaching the bumper trim above the bumpers on a 1991 245? There's three pieces to it: left, right, and center strips. They attach with little clips that are already on the car body. The trim has a metal lip that is supposed to slide into the clip, but I'll damned if I can get it to lock on. It's brutal.
