Ticking, usually is from hydraulic lifters. When the weather starts getting cooler, the viscosity of the oil changes and the lifter bores don't fill as quickly. If the ticking goes away after a few minutes, you're alright. However, if it continues, check your oil level first to make sure it ups to level. Sticking lifters also mean that your oil may be dirty or that their is buildup in the lifters themselves. So, a little more information will go along ways.

When is it ticking? Do you have a manual gear box? Is it just ticking when the gear is in neutral? does the ticking stop when pressing down the clutch. If it is, it is a small general problem in the gearbox. The gears at primary and secondary shaft are actually hitting each others very very sligtly. It doesn't matter, it will not destroy anything. It is very common, it will help to change the clutch, but that is very expensive.

Think you need to have your oil checked. Ticking noise can come from LACK of oil in the top of the enginer; especially iIf your oil light comes on during a cornering turn (moderate speed).

<Volvo has now changed my clutch and flywheel om warranty, now it is not ticking any longer. Someone mentioned that the new flywheel is heavier and some damping functions are added to the new solution.
