turbo stalls motor 740 1987

On acceleration when the turbo gauge peaks it stalls the motor, but when you let off of the accelerator it picks back up What is causing this?

When you say stalls the motor I take it that the motor does not quit, but power levels drop off considerably.

The first item I would check would be the primary low pressure fuel pump in the fuel tank. The symptoms describe a common problem, when the primary pump fails not enough fuel is delivered to the injectors and the engine bogs.
