Wagon third seat safety

Post by mikenancy1 »

We own a '97 850 wagon, and didn't get the optional third seat because we were concerned about its safety. But as our kids get older (they're now 4 and 8) we're hauling their friends around more, and we need extra room in the car. Our choice is to either get the third seat, or trade for a van that has extra seating.

I've looked all over the web for studies on the safety of the third seat, but all I can find is anecdotes and a 1993 letter from the then-President of Volvo to a customer who had the same question I am now asking. His answer, as you would expect, was that the seat is safe, and the chances of a rear-end crash that would hurt its occupants are very slim.

Does anyone have a more definitive thought?

Mike

I looked around on the web and couldn't come up with anything besides what you know.
