88 240 wagon troubles

Post by majanja »

Hi, love my 240 wagon but its been causing me some grief lately. One day it just careened to a stop, not starting. First hope was a coil, my hubby replaced it and it didn't work. Checked dist. cap, spark plugs etc.., ruled that out. Eventually had our mechanic put in a new fuel pump and control module, it ran chuggy for the first day or two in low gears and idled studderingly, then after two days it ran like a champ once again. Since then it sat for a weekend and I went to start it this morning and it wouldn't start. We (my mechanic and I) are completely befuddled. It has 165K plus miles on it (ODometer doesn't function) and has been great, still feel like there is life left in it, there is certainly plenty of money that's been put into it so I don't feel right in just sending to Volvo heaven...yet. Help.

Troubles like you describe are difficult to diagnose via the internet but...

First, when the car initially died did you just fill it with gas? I have run across it several times where a car gets filled with water or bad gas which causes many problems.

Second area to look is this year Volvo should have an LH injection system, they do have some troubles with the Hall effects sensor in the distributor, if this is not functioning correctly the ignition module will not receive a signal and there will not be any spark, or irratic spark.

Finally the Mass Airflow Sensor can also be a cause of this.

Good luck
