Buying new (used) volvo

Post by Dan760 »

We currently have a 760 Turbo wagon and love it (even though we had to get the turbocharger replaced). We're currently looking at two cars, a '97 850 GLT wagon and a 2000 V70 XC. Both cars have under 40,000 miles and seem to be in absolutley pristine condition. The price difference is about $5,000. The '97 with tax and title is just under $15k and the '00 is $20k with title and tags. I guess the question is which is the better purchase. My wife wants the 850 and I'd like to get the XC, but I was reading about having to change all the tires on the XC at the same time and it sounds like more things can go wrong with the XC. Any suggestions?

Thanks
Dan

Yes, the XC is going to be mechanically the same as the 850, only with a few more systems (that can and will fail one day, just like every system will).

The insurance might be higher on the XC, and the fuel economy is sure to be lower, all else being equal.

How much emphasis to you put on AWD and ground clearance?
