'96 850 Automatic Transmission Problem

Post by Rick »

Can anyone help me with my problem. My '96 850 recently developed this new problem. When I shift the transmission into Reverse, I could feel the gear is engaged. However, as I put on the gas, the gear seems to slip and the car doesn't move at once. About about two seconds and at higher rpm, the torque would come and then the car would slowly accelerate. Does anyone know what is the cause?

Rick,
When this happened with my 1987 760GLE or similar symptoms with my 850; I first discovered my transmission fluid was low (very low)... So, with the car running replenished the transmission fluid, which resolved the problem. As a result, discovered that what I thought to be a slow oil leak was really the transmission oil as opposed to engine oil. Hopefully this is helpful, prior to getting another transmission.

I had the transmission oil replaced and topped-ff. The problem is still there! Went to see a mechanic and he suggest the the clutch might be worn-out. The transmission needs to be overhauled! Please help!!!

how did you confuse tranny fluid with engine oil? Tranny fluid should be a nice pink, and flow almost like water. Oil is gonna be a translucent brown and resist flow a little more.

If your tranny fluid was dark enough to be confused with engine oil you really needed that flush!

clutch pack could do it. Would be $400-600 in parts. Labor can be a lot. Do to how involved it is to even just replace this, it's usually recommended to overhaul the entire tranny, or swap for a freshly-rebuilt one. That runs between $1200 and $2000.
