240 (1986)Very bad idle (almost stalling) when starting cold
240 Volvo Wagon 1986 - When starting from cold, the car has a very bad idle and often stalls if revs are not kept up. However, after about a minute of driving away, the car runs very well until the next cold start if it has been parked for long periods. I replaced with a new Fuel Pump, new plugs and leads, new rotar and distributer cap, new Air Mass meter and had the injecters cleaned. This has not solved the problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

To Mr.A.Baker:Thanks very much. Shall get it checked out ASAP. -A.Baker wrote:There is a sensor under the intake between #3and 4 it is blue. And is a two wire. it tells the ecm what temp. the engine is check it for a open and replace it if needed
There is one other item I forgot about . It's the idle speed control motor. It is a T-shaped silver motor w/two hoses conected to it and it is under the intake. make sure that it is clean and working properly. There is a slide inside that you can see move. As the RPMs go up and down the slide will move from open to close. If it doesnt work. There are other thins to check. Good luck

Mr Baker- Thanks very much for your advice. I had the Thermo time switch replaced with not much of an improvement so we removed the Air Control valve and replaced it with an used one that the mechanic had with him and we noticed a marked improvement. However, thinkng that the the improvement was due to the engine warming up, we put the old one back again. Sure enough, the bad idle was back!. So, we put the "used" one back rather than purchase a new one, and the car is running really well. This morning was the big test. It was after a really cold night and the idling problem had gone away. Thanks again. Regards, Darrell
