ok. didnt think it would let me post. heres the problem.
the 1993 240 volv is leaking oil. nothing too major. happened a few months ago. bc im only 16 and my dad is no mechanic we were gonna get it fixed by some shop for like $700. the car is worth like $3,000 so it wasn't worth it. well now its leaking a little more. the leak is like almost directly under the engine. i said it was a gasket but the mechanic said it wasn't......wut should i look for? should i really get some mechanic to do this?? any help is appreciated!

There are many sources for oil leaks but the most common on Volvo are the oil pan plug where there is a copper gasket (washer) under the oil drain plug that should be replaced at each oil change but often is reused and very simple to replace. The valve cover gasket which is very easy for someone with limited mechanical knowledge to fix, the front oil seal which requires a fair amount of knowledge and some special tools to replace.

My mechanic uses this vacuum pump to suck out the old oil from the dipstick slot and never needs to jack up/get under the car to access the drain plug.. He then pumps new oil into the oil cap from a barrel with a pump and dispenser with a volumeter....

The only caution with the suction method is that the sludge often present in the bottom of the oil pan is not flushed out as effectivly as when the oil plug is removed and bottom drained.

MY 93 240 sedan was leaking oil because the person who put the plug in the oil pan used the copper washer that was from the previous oil change.
The solution was to simply put in a new copper washer (you can get several of them for the price of a cup of coffee - go head and buy 15 or so).
My oil leak showed drops of oil hanging from the lowest point on the oil pan. If you have the same problem, you may be able to fix it by simply getting an oil change an ensuring that they use a fresh washer (when you tighten the plug, the soft copper washer gets pressed between the nut and the pan and thus creates a good seal. Copper washers that have already been used have already been pressed and thus do not provide the same seal.
