Hi Kenk,
This is really just a guess, but I have never heard of any Volvo in the 740 and 940 series not having 5 speeds. Some early 740's (1984 - 1985) can be equipped with overdrive instead of 5th gear ( gearbox type M46). The real 5 speed gearbox is called M47.

Kenk is refering to 5 speed manual transmission (M46 or M47) rather the the 3 OD/4 speed automatic AW71 and ZF22L trany.

The closest info I have on production numbers are at:
http://www.vlvworld.com/indexframe.html ... uction.htm
The vast majority of these sold in North America were automatic
