replace radio add CD player

Post by jphodge »

I would like to put a new radio/CD player into my 91 740 turbo wagon. Any suggestions on makes or models that fit well into the space? Any special harness required?

What radio do you have today? If you have an origin Volvo radio, the front is probably slightly tilted forward. If you buy any other brand of CD-player, the front is vertical. To make this tilted front to fit a standard vertical unit, you must buy a special plastic frame. This frame is adding approximately one inch at the upper side. It will also make the opening smaller to make it fit to a standard player. The cost in Sweden is less than 15 USD for that frame. If you get any problems in finding this frame, please contact me by a private message.
It does also exist ready made harness for ISO-standard connection to the Volvo connectors.
I installed a CD-player in my Volvo one month ago. The only problem I met was that the radio is fitted into a plastic assembly box (part of the Volvo). This box has just an opening in the back, so the modern CD-player with higher output became overheated. I had to make extra ventilation openings in the assembly box to solve the problem.
