850 GLT 1995. EES Light after removing mass airflow sensor

Post by Jam »

Hi,

Just found this forum, hopefully you can be of some help please.

On Boxing day morning I ran the car for several minutes to remove ice and warm up before making the short journey home from my parents. After about 10 mins the car engine stopped before I could drive away and then would not restart although the engine was trying to turn over under the power of the starter motor. Despite leaving the car for a further 15 minutes it would still not start. Whilst staring at the internals trying to understand why it wouldn't start I came to the conclusion (don't ask me why) that the mass airflow sensor may be reading falsely due to the car running at idle in cold conditions. Therefore I disconnected this and tried to start the engine which worked straight away; reconecting the sensor stopped the engine again. I used this method to get home - about 3 miles - and then reconnected the sensor with the result that everying worked fine from then on, and still does.

However, the 'Fault in the engine system light' is now on all the time. questions are:

1: Does this mean there is something wrong with the sensor?
2: If not how do I re-set the light? I know how to 'jump' the service light and wonder if there is a simple method to turn the EES light.
3: Should I take to car to a dealer and get them to check the system (expensive!)

I am competant with cars having owned several Landrovers, however this is the first beast I have had that is run by computers!

Hopefully someone can I help and I thank you all in anticipation.

Regards,

Mark

Very well could be.

From http://www.altech.com.pl/wbt/_inne/ccvv.htm

To read codes:
Ignition off
Stick the flylead attached to the cover into A2 socket
Ignition on
press the button next to the led once
Codes appear as blinks, copy down the code onto paper.
Press button again after code displayed to see next code.
After all codes displayed, codes repeat.
(ie continue copying down codes until first code repeats.)
1-1-1 means nothing's there (hopefully, all OK).
Switch off ignition.

Hi,

I finally checked the car this morning! The computer code read 1-2-1 which is indeed the mass airflow sensor. I then decided to reset the system and wait to see if the fault occured again. I tried to reset as per the instructions but the light did not come on after three seconds to allow me to push again. However the reading then said 1-1-1, which is no fault found. Problem now is that the car will not start, just exhibits the same problem as before, just starts to catch but never gets anywhere. I have tried removing the connection from the MAF - which worked before - but this has no effect. I have rechecked the code and it still returns 1-1-1 and also checked the #6 slot as well, 1-1-1.

Question is, does the car not start because I have not reset correctly, or is the MAF shot??

Only other thing I did was take the rear wheel off because the brake pads are binding, just checked this with the intention dismantling later this week. Surely this can't have effected anything.

Can anyone help further?

regards,

Mark
