I have searched behind the glove box, I have searched beneath the passenger kick panel (beneath glove box). I searched beneath the cover by the air intake vents (passenger side) beneath the hood by the firewall and found a vent, but no filter cage. Alas, the darned thing is not to be found...at least by me!

Yes, I've changed my own oil for the last five years.
Last weekend, I changed my own dash lights (and got my dash back in place nicely...something I will NEVER try again!).
No, I don't have a Chilton's...just a cheap 150-page Hayes or something and I can't find a reference anywhere on the web.
Any guidance would be deeply appreciated, as the filter has never been changed.
By the way, my beloved is a 1994 850 GLT sedan with 104 original owner miles and steady, loving, professional maintenance every step of the way. (And yes, that means I didn't do it!)

The 850 cabin filter was an add on unit. It was not installed at the factory. You may have one or you may not.

Like Tsquared said, some had it, some didn't. If you don't you should just see a big oval hole under the panel cover, under the hood, beneath the windsheild.
If you don't have it, I *think* you can just buy one and pop it in. In other words, I've never heard of a housing for the pollen filter.

TSquared and Matthew, I appreciate your responses. And the lack of having one installed to begin with would certainly answer why I couldn't find one. Matthew, I believe I did see the oval hole you describe on the passenger side next to the firewall. There was an obvious air intake with a rectangular "hood" if you will that fit into the "hole" that corresponds to a picture I found on Bay 13 for replacing the pollen filter. The things that make you say, "Hmmm...".
How kind your assumption of expertise, T2. Hardly. Unfortunately, I'm one of those not daunted at the beginning of a task, but after getting the dash off, the lights replaced, and the dash returned (the most difficult part of all), I have a much, much deeper appreciation for my two Volvo Guys as never before. I'll just stick to oil changes from now on.
