XC70 Starter problem

Post by Jan »

Hi, I have a XC70 - 2000 and it has a bad habit.
When you put your key and ignite the engine it doesen't start immediately, but after a while. My VOLVO car dealer says that I should keep the ignition on with delay for 5-10 seconds and then turn the key and start the engine.
Actually this works and my dealer says that this is normal. But as far as I know no other VOLVO that I have driven have this problem.
It is very enoying to have to wait like it was a diesel engine just to start the engine.
I have thought about the cause of the problem and I think that the fuel pressure isn't enough and when I have the ignition for some extra seconds the fuel pump pumps up the pressure. Could it be a check valve or something that is leaking , or is it a electrical problem with somekind of sensor that is palying a trick on me. Is there anyone that have experinece about this, if so I would be very happy to hear the solution. BR/ Jan :?

Could be a bunch of stuff. Spark plugs, fuel pump problems, fuel relay problems, clogged air filter/fuel filter/throttle body.

Does it spit out smoke? When was your last tune up? Have you run fuel treatment through lately?
Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.

Also -> Amazon link
. Click that when you go to buy something on Amazon and MVS gets a cut!

The car has regularely been maintained by Volvo every 20 000 km and now the car recently passed 80 000 km. I have not seen any smoke and the engine runs smooth when it is started. The problem seems to be the delay in starting. Like there is no fuel coming or similar. The closesest I have experienced similar behavior on is a 1970 Volvo 144 with carburator when it in a hot summer day got starter problem due to probaly "cooking" the fuel ("steam lock"). But on that car it was a mechanical fuel pump and it's not giving such a high pressure in the fuel line.
The car I had before this XC70 was a V40 2,0 T 2000 and it has similar fuel system and I have never seen something like this on that car.
I doubt that the spark plugs or air filter have something to do with this.
Is there anyone that can recommend a good repair manual for this model.
BR/Jan
